The Victor IV was one of only two machines in mahogany in Victor's famous Roman numeral series, the other being the top-of-the-line Victor VI. Mahogany at this time was a wood that appealed mostly to upper class tastes, as the majority of buyers preferred golden oak.

Not as many Victor IVs were sold as some other models, making the machine relatively scarce. It's quite popular with modern collectors, because of its beautiful, restrained cabinet and reliable double spring motor which it shared with the Victor III.

This version of the Victor IV probably dates 1905-1912.

This is a nice, smooth running machine. I have rebuild the motor, ie taken everything apart, cleaned, adjusted and put it back together. This includes polishing the governor shaft, cleaning the drive gear, and lubricating the turntable shaft bearing. Most important, the mainsprings have been pulled and re-greased, a big job, but necessary to keep the springs from sticking to themselves as they unwind.

The reproducer has also been rebuilt for maximum sound.

The cabinet has been professionally refinished to a deep, dark mahogany like the original.

There is some not atypical wear somewhat down to the brass in the parts that were handled frequently, such as the speed control and tone arm. The back bracket retains original paint, with the stencil work a little faded but still legible.

I will tell you that when we received this machine someone had replaced the rear upper trim panel that holds the hinges, and there was evidence of a crack in the rear panel that had been reglued. (This happens more than you might think, and is usually caused by excessive pressure on the back bracket during transit.) I didn't like the replacement part, so we had a new part made of mahogany recut by an expert woodworker. You cannot tell this has been replaced by looking at the outside of the cabinet.

The black flower horn, approximately 22 inches long with a 21 inch bell, is the type of horn this machine would originally have been sold with. There is some mild to moderate corrosion on the interior of the horn, which has been polished out just a little. The horn has been fitted with an older reproduction elbow.

This is a very respectable machine for someone who would like to display a nice, working example example of one of the better Victor models.
