This console Regina music box, sold as a Style 40, most likely dates to around 1904. The beautifully decorated cabinet over gold paint was known as a Rookwood finish.
Rookwood machines are scarce and highly desirable. This one isn't in pristine condition, although it is in decent enough condition that it would be a crime to touch up or refinish the cabinet; in most cases our photographs tend to make the subject look worse than real life, but here the case is a little the opposite. There is some weathering, particularly on the lid, and some puckering of the painted gilding. This might appeal to you if you are one of those people who prefer their antiques to look antique.
Mechanically, the machine is in great condition. I pulled and gently cleaned the combs, star wheel gantry and dampers, and I lubricated the motor. The double combs are exceptionally clean, no broken teeth; the leads are in excellent condition, no oxidation; and the dampers are in regulation, no buzz or squeak.
The motor is running smoothly and starts/stops properly. The speed control adjustment is also working.
