Standard Talking Machine Model A With Regular Turntable for sale

The Standard Talking Machine Model A was introduced by the Great Northern Manufacturing Company of Chicago post 1906. Known in the trade as a "scheme" machine, it was given away by local merchants as part of an advertising promotion. The customer received coupons after each purchase from the local merchant redeemable toward a free talking machine.

The catch was that the Standard A was fitted with a special 9/16 inch oversize spindle, and could not accept regular 78rpm records. The buyer was locked into the purchase of special, proprietary records.

The Standard machines used ordinary Columbia motors and reproducers. From a modern collector's standpoint, this is helpful because it means that parts are readily available.

The Standard discs are not extremely scarce and frequently come up for sale. However, they are nowhere near as plentiful as regular 78rpm records, and offer a modern collector a limited choice of music.

We have solved the problem of availability of music for you by fitting this Standard Model A with a special, new turntable adapted for regular 78rpm records! Just lift off the original turntable (it easily comes straight up) and replace it with the new turntable. With two turntables you can play both the special Standard records and regular 78rpm records, and you can keep the machine original at the same time.

Mechanically, this machine is running very well. We have rebuilt the reproducer for maximum sound. You can hear the machine playing one of the special Standard records by clicking on the link to the mp3 file.

The oak case has nice original finish and a nice, colorful original red decal. The red horn, approximately 13 inches long with a 16.5 inch bell, has very decent original paint with a few spots of scratches/weathering. This is much better paint than you typically find on these little horns; the paint is more frequently seen totally weathered off and the metal corroded. There is some weathering down to the brass on the nickel plated elbow.

As a bonus, to make an interesting historical display, we are including two of the special Standard records, and an original coupon worth one dollar redeemable toward a free Standard machine.
