This Columbia BI, also known as the Sterling, probably dates ca. 1905-1908. The BI, initially priced at $45, was a mid to upper range machine, and would have been a competitor to a Victor III. The double spring motor offered extended playing time.

This example has nice weathered original old dark varnish and original decals. The nickel plating is still quite decent, not rusted out as sometimes found.

The very desirable Columbia nickel horn is approximately 19 inches long with a 21 inch bell, and is in much better than average condition.

We have done some work on the motor, cleaning it up a bit, and replacing two gears to get it to run properly. We replaced the fiber drive gear with an original brass drive gear; it can be a little noisier than the fiber gear, but we have also had problems with some of the reproduction fiber gears. We had to replicate a combination brake/speed control, as this particular part is often missing and not available as a reproduction. We also rebuilt the reproducer.

Everything is now running smoothly and properly.

The fancy case and nickel horn of the BI absolutely exude eye appeal, making it quite popular with modern collectors.
