The Columbia Graphophone Type AZ was introduced in 1904 at a price of $25, making it a competitor to Edison's Standard Phonograph. Unlike Edison, who offered relatively few models, Columbia seemed to confront the buyer with a myriad of choices, all of varying quality. Unlike some Columbia models, the AZ did not employ pot metal components that bedevil modern collectors such as pot metal chassis or pot metal carriages, making the AZ a reliable choice for people interested in Columbia machines.
This is a nice, original untouched example. I had degunked the motor just a bit and rebuilt the reproducer. The case still sports an attractive original decal. The machine is playing well.
This AZ comes with an original Columbia type crane. Original cranes are extremely hard to find. And at the end of the crane you will be pleased to discover a beautiful red morning glory horn with hand-painted flowers.
It seems that everyone wants a horn like this, but unfortunately this type of horn is not easy to find. Almost all horns of this type were aftermarket horns, not factory equipment. Black horns, brass horns, brass bell horns, even horns painted with a sunburst design are far more common. This horn is in very decent condition on the inside. The outside, as typically seen, shows some corrosion, weathering, and a little paint touch-up.
Price includes 5 original cylinders in very good condition.
