The path to a reliable spring motor for the Gramophone was winding and arduous.

In 1896 Levi Montross of Camden, New Jersey was approached to develop an improved motor.

This machine with a lever wind mechanism is know to collectors as the Tin Can Berliner.

The ratchet wind arrangement would be dropped upon the arrival of the Improved Gram-o-phone of 1897.
