Starr Arts and Crafts Victrola

The Starr Piano Company of Richmond, Indiana is best remembered as the parent company of the very successful Gennett record brand, but it also manufactured a few talking machines under the Starr name. This Victrola type machine was probably manufactured between 1915-1920, and is quite unusual in that it is in the Arts and Crafts style, joining possibly the Amberola IV as one of the few Arts and Crafts inspired Victrolas that I have ever seen. The legs splay out, and a shelf for record storage drops down from the side. The exposed "Singing Throat" horn is beautifully done of solid spruce. This machine does not use cheap components. The taper arm is not pot metal but nickel over brass, and the original reproducer appears to be a Victor Exhibition knock-off. The motor is working and the machine plays properly. This would be a great addition to a mission or Arts and Crafts house, or just an unusual talking machine to add to a collection. $650
