Standard Talking Machine Style X
$650

A nice working example of a Standard Talking Machine. These machines, distributed by the Great Northern company, utilized Columbia components and were distributed as premiums, ie you bought so much in dollars from your local merchant and received coupons good toward a free machine. There are several variations of the Standard machines -- this one, the X with a small belled horn is probably the most commonly seen. There was also an X2 with an extended arm, a rear-mounted Standard A, and even internal horn versions. The machines were fitted with an oversize spindle so as to accept only the special Standard records. This Standard X is working properly and plays well. The case has a nice decal and the tone and support arms, and horn, are original. I had taken a few dents out of the horn and partially repainted it, there's a tiny tear in the metal which was filled and which you probably won't see unless it's pointed out to you. I'm not sure about the reproducer -- it may be an older reproduction (or it may not) but it plays well. I ordered a new crank for this and it works but is too fat to fit through the crankhole escutcheon, so I just pulled and saved the escutcheon. If I seem to be nitpicking about the machine remember that this isn't ebay and I try to describe things accurately. This machine includes two of the special Standard records. If you want to play regular 78s on a Standard X you have to adapt the spindle, or drill out your records a little. This is a great opportunity to purchase a functional outside horn phonograph at a modest price. $650
